In November 2008, we ran a 2 day workshop with Brockwood International School which gave twenty students aged 15 upwards the opportunity to try out subtractive techniques in Sculpture. Students carved thermalite blocks using a variety of methods including drilling, chiselling, sawing and filing, having first made clay maquettes following a brain storming session to develop their ideas.

The students also had the opportunity to learn wood carving techniques including the use of gouges, spokeshaves, rifflers and power carvers.  Many of the resulting carvings were highly effective and powerful.  Students and members of Wessex Sculptors found it an extremely enjoyable experience and learnt a lot.  We are keen to repeat the workshop next year.
