Frances Dixon

My father was a portrait artist and attended the Royal College of Art but due to his early death and family circumstances I was forced to forgo my intended place at the Slade school of Art.

As a child and a young adult I never stopped drawing or painting but later became interested in the third dimension. This appealed to me as an expressive way of creating with my hands and using the many different materials available.

I am mainly self-taught but have attended sculpture and art courses in Surrey and West Dean College. I work in terracotta: portrait heads, the human form and wildlife. I enjoy the fine work that clay allows, which is then fired or cast. I also work with resin, ciment fondue and direct plaster. My later work has been with driftwood, creating large outdoor pieces, dictated by the shape and natural beauty of the wood, enhancing with ciment and metal where appropriate

I have exhibited at various venues including Borde Hill and Saville Gardens. I have sold and received commissions for my work.

I also a member of the Surrey Sculpture Society
